Latin-America: Challenges and Growing Global Engagement
August 13, 2011
"This was the best Regional Conference ever" was a remark made by several participants. From all over Latin-America they took part in in the annual event, this time in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Much time was dedicated to study some of the challenging topics facing the Church today, like "The Prosperity Gospel Movement" and "How can we live a healthy spiritual life".
This last topic was introduced by Dr. Walter Perez
(picture) from Argentina and Dr. Miguel Palomino from Peru. Both member of the AWF International Commission on Theological Education (ICTE). Some of their papers will soon be published on the AWF website.
All countries presented reports and all referred to missions as a high priority. Host country Brazil provided a good example; the national Alliance Church has missionaries in China, India, Japan, Portugal and Russia. AWF president Arie Verduijn commended the Region for its outstanding global ministries, but challenged the leaders to aim for more, as it seems that the potential for missions is much stronger than the actual engagement today.
During the Conference Rev. Javier Cortazar from Peru was elected as new Regional Coordinator, to replace Rev. Eladio Medina in 2012.
